Volcano

Hey Blog,

Here a photo of the recent eruption in Rabaul.

It was taken by Bruce Alexander from the Hamamas Hotel and was sourced from AAP.

We didn't get much ash (close to nothing at all) - Kokopo and Rabaul got most of the ash.

Latest news following eruption...

Hey all, Hannah here. If you have been following the news over the weekend, chances are y'all heard that Mt Tavurur a.k.a. Matupit erupted on Saturday morning. Well fortunately, everyone is fine. Lyn gave me a call 11am Saturday and told me everyone was evacuating from Rabaul itself, and later that afternoon I was in phone contact with Kabaira Dive - it appears the eruption had minimal impact out at Kabaira. Apparently Kokopo copped a fair bit of ash, but thats all.

The news reports all mention how Rabaul's residents are all used to this sort of thing, but in my opinion, I believe that after going through a major eruption back in 1994, peoples' memories are still a bit raw. Hence the voluntary evacuations. No doubt this weekend's event have brought back some unwanted memories.

Anyway, will keep you posted on how things are going at Kabaira Dive. Also I believe that flights in and out of the area were cancelled over the weekend - will let you know when I hear they are back to normal.

Cheers, H.
